PIREPs and TAMDAR

Enjoying New Years Day ice storm here at home after having my last trip today canceled for the weather, and wanderd onto the TAMDAR site. I read with great interest the last post about how the forecaster from NWS-MQT used TAMDAR to tighten the forecasts for the December ice storm up there. It got me thinking...

With the weather today (January 1st), PIREPS are a plenty due to all of us pilots trying to find the ice layers - and avoid them. Same with turbulence. Of course, not every PIREP is entered into the system by the ATC facility it is reported to. However, we Saab pilots listen up and pay close attention.

It occured to me that PIREP data, coupled with TAMDAR soundings may help the project/experiment. Would there be a way to easily couple PIREPs with a TAMDAR report? What if in comment section of entries made by ATC into the system, they included flight numbers?

Also, if Mesaba pilots knew that PIREPS would be used in the TAMDAR experiment, they would be encouraged to make more reports. More reports = more flight safety and better weather reporting/forecasting.
